Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the EU research programme for the period 2014 - 2020. The programme funds research and innovation projects that will help solve societal challenges, create more jobs and contribute to economic growth in Europe. These goals are incorporated in European strategies such as European Research Area, Europe 2020 and  Innovation Union.

H2020 is one of the most important measures to help achieve the goals. H2020 has three focus areas; Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges, all of which are relevant for medical and health research environments. Excellent Science finances independent research. Industrial Leadership is mainly aimed at companies, but often asks for/requires collaboration with academic research environments. Societal Challenges are divided into themes/challenges such as health, food/agriculture, climate, transport and social security.

The calls have defined issues that EU wants solved. A project must have a minimum of 3 research institutions and/or companies from a minimum of 3 different EU member states or associated countries.

Joint Programming Initiatives

Joint Program Initiatives (JPI) are European joint programmes organized in various thematic challenges. Norwegian researchers can apply for project funding through calls where Norway participates. 10 JPIs have been established, among others on antimicrobial resistance, neurodegenerative diseases and food and health. Norway participates in all of them.
